Alberta, Canada Opens for Filipino Nurses and Other Professionals

A Memorandum of Understading (MOU) has been signed today between the Philippine Secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment and the Alberta Minister of Employment and Immigration paving the way for Filipino Engineers, Doctors, Nurses and other professionals to have a chance to work in Alberta, Canada.

Alberta is the fourth Canadian Province to sign an MOU with the Philippine government. Others are Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Manitoba.

The MOU commits the ethical recruitment, selection, protection and skills development of OFWs who will be working there. The MOU also ensures that no recruitment fees will be charged against the workers who want to work there meaning the employer in Canada will shoulder such fees. This underscores the 300,000 nurse and other professional shortage in the said province.

To be able to process the employment in Alberta, a worker should apply only in agencies authorized to recruit workers for Canada or through the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA).

This may give Filipino nurses other options and opportunities especially now that the United States, the top destination for Filipino nurses, is in regression.
